Over the last few months we have noticed an increase in the number of requests for breast reduction surgery. This is due, in part, to changes in body aesthetics. In the media, there seems to be a move away from voluptuous, hour glass figures to a leaner, more athletic physique.
In recent months a number of high profile celebrities have spoken openly about their breast reduction surgeries, and it is likely that this has also prompted a surge in requests.
In line with changes to body aesthetics, we have also noticed a move away from large breast implants. Instead, more women are opting for smaller breast enlargements, with a focus on a natural enhancement that is in proportion with the rest of the body.
What Can You Expect From Breast Reduction Surgery?
For some women, large breasts are inconvenient and uncomfortable. Women often report that they find it difficult to fit into the clothes they want to wear, and in some cases, overly large breasts can be the cause of distress and embarrassment. They can also cause significant physical discomfort such as back and shoulder pain.
Like many parts of the body, breasts can increase in size as a result of weight gain. Losing weight can therefore help to reduce breast size. However, sometimes it is not possible to reduce this area through exercise and diet alone, and increasing numbers of women are turning to breast reduction surgery.
Breast reduction surgery (or mammoplasty) is carried out under general anaesthetic and involves removing fat and skin tissue to reduce the weight and volume of the breasts. The breasts are then reshaped and the nipples are repositioned.
This procedure takes approximately two hours to complete. As part of the recovery period we would normally recommend a week off work. You should allow six weeks after the surgery before you can begin exercising again. This will vary from patient to patient.
Prior to any surgery you would be required to undergo a consultation, where Dr Frati can talk through your requirements in detail. He will assess your physical and emotional health and will discuss the likely results. To see examples of Dr Frati’s work, take a look at our gallery.
