Breast Reduction Birmingham

Breast reduction surgery is for patients who experience discomfort from overly large breasts. In just a few hours, a patient can alleviate many years-worth of stress on their body with a procedure that can drastically change both physical and emotional problems caused by breasts that are too big.

Large breasts can cause women to suffer from back, shoulder, and neck pain, as well as skin rashes beneath the breasts. In addition to physical discomfort, many women with overly large breasts also feel self-conscious and lack confidence. Also known as a reduction mammoplasty, this procedure is designed to reduce the size of your breasts while creating a more symmetrical look.

If you are considering a breast reduction and would like to book an appointment to speak with experienced cosmetic surgeon Dr Riccardo Frati, please call Harley Surgery Birmingham at (020) 3633 2619 or complete a form on our website. We look forward to helping you achieve a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing breast size.

Before and After Photos

Bigger isn’t Always Better

Larger than average breasts can cause a host of medical issues. The weight of the breasts can cause neck, back and shoulder pain on a daily basis as well as tension headaches due to muscle strain. This can also limit mobility and make it difficult to participate in physical activities.

Having overly large breasts can also be embarrassing and can cause women to feel self-conscious about their bodies. Many women with larger than average breasts try to conceal them with loose fitting clothing and may avoid activities where they will have to expose their chest area. These issues can greatly affect a woman’s quality of life, causing her to feel uncomfortable in her own skin.

About Breast Reduction

Reduction Mammaplasty

Reduction mammaplasty is a popular surgery, with an estimated 500,000 procedures performed every year. (1) The goal of breast reduction is to provide patients with breasts that are in proportion with their body size and shape. Not only will this improve the appearance of their breasts, but it will also help to relieve any of the physical symptoms associated with overly large breasts. A breast reduction will also improve how clothes fit, making them more comfortable to wear.

There are three key goals in reduction mammoplasty: (2)

  • To reduce overall breast volume
  • To maintain nipple-areola shape
  • To achieve an aesthetically pleasing shape

What Happens During Breast Reduction Surgery?

During a breast reduction procedure, excess tissues are removed to create smaller and more proportionate breasts. The nipples are then repositioned to an aesthetic position on the breast mound.

Liposuction

Dr Frati may recommend liposuction for those who are primarily concerned with excess fatty tissue. This method involves the insertion of a cannula under the skin, which is then used to suction away fat deposits. This method is ideal for those who are within their ideal weight range but still have disproportionate breasts.

Benefits

Breast reduction surgery offers a number of benefits for those with disproportionately large breasts, including:

  • Back and shoulder pain reduction

Once your surgery is scheduled, you’ll receive detailed preoperative instructions to ensure that your procedure goes smoothly and that you enjoy the very best results possible. These instructions include:

  • Discontinuing blood thinners, supplements, and other medications as instructed
  • Stopping nicotine use in the weeks leading up to your surgery and remaining nicotine-free for the duration of your recovery
  • Filling prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics in advance of your procedure
  • Coordinating a lift home and escort if sedation or general anaesthesia will be used

Arranging time off from work and social commitments to ensure adequate time to rest

Procedure

The procedure begins with an incision made around the areola, extending down to the breast crease. Excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue are then removed, and the nipple and areola are repositioned to a higher location on the breast. Dr Frati uses care and precision to make the necessary changes that will reduce the size of your breasts. Finally, the incisions are closed using absorbable sutures. The entire procedure typically takes 2-4 hours, depending on the treatment plan.

Recovery & Results

After your breast reduction procedure, you’ll be fitted with special supportive dressings to help manage swelling. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days after your procedure, but this should gradually subside. During this time, we recommend keeping your head elevated above your heart when resting to help reduce swelling. Do not apply ice to the area as it can disrupt proper blood flow, however, you can easily manage discomfort with the medication that Dr Frati prescribes.

You’ll return for follow-up appointments so that we can monitor your healing. Work can be resumed after two weeks, unless your job is strenuous or physically demanding. Please avoid rigorous activities for the next several weeks until instructed otherwise. Once you’ve fully recovered from your breast reduction, you’ll enjoy smaller, more symmetrical breasts, improved posture, and relief from aching back and shoulder pain.

FAQ

How does breast reduction help with back pain?

Having overly large breasts can cause chronic back pain. When the breasts are reduced, the muscles and ligaments that support the spine can relax, relieving pressure and resulting in improved posture and relief from back pain.

Is breast reduction recovery painful?

Most patients experience some discomfort after the procedure, which can be managed with prescription pain medication. In time, swelling, tenderness and bruising will fade as you heal.

Does a breast reduction improve back pain?

In many cases, yes. Many of our patients find that their back pain is significantly improved or completely eliminated after having a breast reduction. The results can be dramatic and are often life-changing.

Is there any scarring after a breast reduction procedure?

The incisions made during a breast reduction are carefully placed to minimise visible scarring. The scars typically fade over time but may not disappear entirely.
