    What Is Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is the medical term for enlarged male breasts. Sometimes referred to as “man boobs,” gynaecomastia is an extremely common condition. Estimates indicate that over 30% of the male population experiences symptoms of gynaecomastia at some point in their life.[1] It is especially common during adolescence, when young men undergo hormonal changes. Boys and girls both produce measurable amounts of estrogen, which is responsible for the growth of breast tissue. If estrogen levels surge during a young man’s teenage years, it can result in the formation of an enlarged chest.

Many boys transition seamlessly into adulthood, when their chests flatten out as puberty subsides. However, some men carry the symptoms of gynaecomastia into their adult years.

Excess fat and breast tissue may develop in the chest area as a result of hormone production, certain medicines, or the natural ageing process in older gentlemen. Man boobs (moobs) are not necessarily the result of a poor diet or unhealthy exercise, though many men suffer in silence. Gynaecomastia can be upsetting or embarrassing, convincing those who struggle with the condition to feel too helpless to correct it. Fortunately, however, Dr Frati is on the case.

Our medical team at Harley Surgery delivers extremely successful results to our patients. We understand how dismaying gynaecomastia can be, and we strive to help everyone feel and look their very best.

The Benefits of Gynaecomastia Corrective Surgery

Every man has his own sense of individuality. Whether he wants to be perceived as burly or scrappy, his look is his and his alone. The main benefit of gynaecomastia surgery is that it caters to each man’s frame and works with the contours of his unique chest.

Dr Frati can remove the excess fat and glandular tissue associated with gynaecomastia, but he will do so in accordance with your dimensions. Your body will dictate what it needs; Dr Frati is simply here to listen and guide the process with an expert hand.

    Ideal Candidates for Gynaecomastia Surgery

There are many factors that can cause or contribute to the persistence of enlarged male breasts, including:

    • Natural hormonal changes (like puberty)
    • Ageing
    • Weight fluctuations and/or obesity
    • Androgen deprivation therapy to treat prostate cancer
    • Excessive use of alcohol or marijuana
    • Anabolic steroids
    • The development of a tumor
    • Testosterone blockers
    • Certain antidepressants
    • Certain anti-anxiety medications
    • Some antibiotics
    • Ulcer medications
    • Some heart medications
    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Malnutrition, which may affect testosterone levels

Regardless of the root causes of gynaecomastia, Harley Surgery wants to help. If you are a healthy individual whose weight is relatively stable, then male breast reduction may be perfect for you. Dr Frati can assess your condition, listen to your goals, and determine if you are a potential candidate for gynaecomastia surgery.

    Preparing for Gynaecomastia Surgery

During your personalized consultation, Dr Frati will give you a set of detailed instructions to guide your preparation process. He may advise you to stop taking anti-inflammatories, like ibuprofen, several days prior to your surgery. You should also quit smoking in the weeks preceding your breast reduction procedure.

Dr Frati will recommend any necessary medications well in advance of your surgical appointment.

This will give you plenty of time to fill your prescriptions before your procedure. Please arrange for a loved one to drive you to and from our offices on the surgery date. If you have any questions, please call 020 633 2619. One of our attentive staff members will be happy to assist you.

    The Gynaecomastia Surgical Procedure

Gynaecomastia surgery involves liposuction to remove unwanted fat cells. A small tube, inserted into inconspicuous areas, is used to vacuum out these fat cells, leaving only a very minimal scar. Dr Frati can also surgically remove glandular tissue and skin, if required. This procedure will give the patient a smoother, flatter chest. Dr Frati performs most gynaecomastia operations under general anaesthesia, but he may use local anaesthesia with sedation in some circumstances.

    Gynaecomastia surgery is very straightforward.

Dr Frati can often perform the procedure in approximately 1-2 hours. The exact duration depends on the extent of the area to be treated. The staff at Harley Surgery will apprise you of the specifics regarding your case during the initial consultation. You will receive the information you need so you can know what to expect on the day of your procedure.

    Recovery from Gynaecomastia Surgery

The caring team at Harley Surgery wants you to enjoy a happy, healthy recovery!

Immediately following surgery, the chest area may be slightly bruised and swollen. To help reduce swelling, you may be instructed to wear a pressure garment for 1-2 weeks. Please refrain from strenuous exercise for about three weeks. It usually takes about six weeks to fully resume your normal routine. To ease your discomfort, Dr Frati may prescribe a painkiller, but please avoid ibuprofen.

    Amazing Results

Give your body the time it needs to heal properly. You will notice some improvement almost immediately and the remarkable results will continue to appear over time. Swelling will subside little by little each day for about six weeks following your procedure, but it can take up to six months to behold the full benefits of gynaecomastia corrective surgery. You can schedule a follow up appointment to keep in contact with Harley Surgery during this time. We want you to be satisfied and confident that your progress is going well.

Dr Frati is dedicated to keeping his patients informed, before and well beyond any treatment.

    Complementary Procedures

Aesthetic surgery is a holistic endeavor for Dr Frati. He prides himself on treating each patient as a unique person, not just an assemblage of body parts. When you enjoy the transformational benefits of gynaecomastia surgery, it must be viewed alongside the contours of the rest of your frame. If, for example, you still have excess fat or skin along your abdominal region, you may want to address that with a tummy tuck at Harley Surgery. Or you may want to highlight the rugged musculature of your upper arms or abs with a Vaser liposuction procedure.

Regardless of which treatments you desire, Dr Frati is ready to work with you. He will help you set realistic goals and achieve fantastic results. Gynaecomastia is just one of the many conditions Dr Frati can correct. Please call 020 633 2619 to learn how Harley Surgery can help you achieve the body you have always wanted.

What Does Gynaecomastia Surgery Cost in London?

Every case is different and every patient’s needs must be respected. To determine the price of your specific procedure, contact Harley Surgery and ask about gynaecomastia surgery in London or Manchester. Cost should never prohibit anyone from getting the help they need.

    FAQ

    Is gynaecomastia surgery safe?

Yes. Dr Frati is a world renowned plastic surgeon, and his attention to detail and safety is the best in London, Manchester, and beyond. You will be administered the proper anaesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the gynaecomastia procedure. Your safety and health are our top priorities at Harley Surgery.

Can gynaecomastia return or persist after surgery?

It is very rare for enlarged breast tissue to reappear after gynaecomastia surgery. Dr Frati assesses each case on its merits. If one’s glands are producing excess breast tissue, then glandular excision will be factored into the procedure to address such cases. When men abuse anabolic steroids or other substances, it can contribute to the persistence of gynaecomastia.
