Male Chest Reduction, Dr Frati

Gynaecomastia or “man boobs” is an extremely common condition and can affect around 40-60% of the male population. This is when excess fat and breast tissue develops in the chest area and can be the result of hormone production or puberty in younger males, certain medicines or, indeed the onset of natural ageing in older gentlemen. Man boobs (moobs) are not the result of a poor diet or unhealthy exercise regime and many men suffer in silence with this upsetting and sometimes seriously embarrassing issue, believing that there is very little they can do about it. Fortunately, however this is not the case.

Dr Riccardo Frati offers Gyeaecomastia surgery at from his Harley Street practice to give back a sense of confidence and wellbeing to his patients with extremely successful results. He believes that everyone should look and feel their very best and understands the severe impact that this condition can cause.

How does Gynaecomastia surgery work?

Gynaecomastia surgery involves the practice of liposuction to remove the unwanted fat cells and then a surgical procedure to cut away glandular tissue and skin if required. A small tube, inserted in to inconspicuous areas is used to suck out the unwanted fat, leaving only a very minimal scar. This procedure will leave a flatter, smoother chest with more pleasing contours. Most operations for gynaecomastia take about 90 minutes to complete and are performed under general anaesthesia, or in some cases, under local anaesthesia with sedation.

How do I know if I am suitable for Gynaecomastia surgery?

Prior to undergoing any procedure, it is vital that Dr Frati conducts a comprehensive consultation so that he can ascertain your physical and emotional health, your medical history any concerns you may have surrounding the procedure. You will be able to discuss your expectations, costs involved and any downtime or aftercare needed, so that you can make an informed and confident choice.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure is very straightforward and simple and can often be performed in a matter of 1-2 hours. Depending on the extent of the area to be treated and Dr Fratis’ decision on the best course to take, you may need to have a general anaesthetic, however, you will be made aware of this upon initial consultation and given all the information you need on what to expect and do on the day. If GA is not required, the procedure will be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation.

What can I expect following surgery?

Following surgery, the chest may be slightly swollen and bruised for a while and to help reduce this swelling, patients are often instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for one or two weeks. It is advisable to refrain from exercise for about three weeks and, in general, it takes about six weeks before one can return to completely normal activities. To ease with discomfort, Paracetamol or a prescribed pain killer can be taken, but not Ibuprofen.

What are the potential risks?

The potential complication rates of the surgery are extremely low. They can include inadequate removal of breast tissue, an uneven contour to the chest and reduced nipple sensation. In rare cases, if an excision has been performed, rather than liposuction, then a blood clot can, potentially form that may need to be drained at a second operation. However, Dr Frati is an expert in this field and complication rates are incredibly rare. Again, you will be fully advised on any potential risks and contraindications prior to treatment, in a comprehensive consultation with Dr Frati.

When will I see results?

Following the surgery, your body will need time to heal so patience is a virtue, however you should see some improvement almost immediately. Swelling will subside a little each day for up to 6 weeks following the procedure and it can take up to a full 6-8 months to see your exact final result. You will be able to attend a follow up appointment and are encouraged to keep in contact with the clinic during this time in order to be confident and satisfied that things are progressing well. Dr Frati is dedicated to ensuring all his patients have the appropriate information regarding their expectations and results, prior to and following treatment.
