Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The tummy tuck or abdominoplasty refers to a surgical procedure to remove excess fat and skin from the abdominal area. Over the last few years as body aesthetics have changed, much focus has fallen onto the abdomen. The term ‘killer abs’ has become a common phrase and is synonymous with the desire to obtain a flat and toned stomach.

For some people this is not achievable by diet and exercise alone. Carrying excess fat around the abdominal area can be a source of distress and embarrassment and can lead to low self-confidence. In these circumstances a tummy tuck can offer a noticeable solution.

A number of factors can cause a build-up of excess skin in the abdomen areas, including pregnancy, weight loss and the natural aging process. A tummy tuck allows fatty tissue and excess skin to be cut away, leaving a slimmer and sleeker appearance.

There are two types of tummy tuck, partial and full. A partial tummy tuck (also known as a mini tummy tuck) is suitable for patients with minimal amounts of tissue to remove. It involves a smaller incision across the lower abdomen, without the need for muscle tightening or bellybutton repositioning.

A full tummy tuck addresses larger areas of excess skin and fatty tissue. An incision is made across the abdomen to remove skin and fat. In addition the surgeon will tighten muscles and reposition the navel.

Abdominoplasty operations require a general anaesthetic and vary in length, depending on the type of surgery performed. In some cases surgery can last for a few hours and involves one or two nights in hospital. Sometimes abdominoplasty is combined with liposuction to obtain the best possible results.

No surgery should be undertaken lightly and Dr Frati will go through a consultation process to ensure you are physically, mentally and emotionally suitable for this procedure. He will go through the various options, discuss likely outcomes and explain the process and recovery time.

Tummy tucks are available to both men and women, though they are more frequently requested by women after pregnancy. These surgeries have been in the media recently as part of the so-called ‘mommy makeover’ trend.
