Breast enlargement, Dr Frati

For thousands of women in the UK, the shape, size and volume of their breasts is something they are unhappy with, for unlimited reasons. This could be a sudden loss of weight, post pregnancy and child birth or simply that some women feel that the size of their breasts are not in proportion to their overall body shape.

Breast augmentation is the most common cosmetic procedure in the UK with 30,000 procedures carried out in the UK each year alone. The choices for breast surgery, from what size and shape to go to, which implant to use and the surgeon to chose are endless and can sometimes be very confusing and stressful. It is vital to do your research and find a surgeon that is highly experienced in this procedure.

Dr Riccardo Frati is a leading and fully qualified cosmetic surgeon who is registered with the General Medical Council and is on the GMC specialist register for plastic surgery in the UK. Dr Frati specialises in breast augmentation and offers this treatment to his patients from his specialist clinic in Harley Street.

How does the procedure of breast enlargement work?

The procedure of breast augmentation involves surgery which is performed under general anaesthetic. A surgical breast implant is inserted behind each breast, either over or under the chest muscle, depending on the existing amount of breast tissue and body fat in the breast area. Dr Frati will decide which technique to use when inserting the implant after a full consultation and examination. It is important to achieve the most natural result and this is a key factor to the process.

Am I suitable for breast augmentation?

Prior to any treatment being carried out, it is imperative to have a consultation with Dr Frati to discuss why you are considering breast augmentation. After all, this is a huge decision and a surgical procedure and it is important to be sure that it is truly right for you. Dr Frati will examine your breasts to determine the size and shape and type of implant required and will also take a full medical history to ensure you are fit and healthy to go ahead with surgery. He will discuss with you what to expect on the day and post op protocols and aftercare. You may need to see Dr Frati a number of times to discuss any concerns and to be fully informed and confident.

What happens on the day?

Breast implant surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthetic, and takes between 60 and 90 minutes. During the operation, a cut (incision) will be made in the skin next to the treated breast(s). Dr Frati will have discussed with you the location of the incisions beforehand so you’re aware of where the scars will be.  After the incision, the implant is positioned between your breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind your chest muscle. Once the implants are in place, the incision is stitched and covered with a dressing.

What do I need to do for aftercare?

You’ll usually be able to go home the same day you have the operation, or you may need to stay in hospital overnight and Dr Frati will advise on this prior to surgery. When you return home, you’ll need to take things easy at first, before gradually returning to most of your normal activities within the next four to six weeks. It is usually advised to take 2 weeks off work and you can return to the gym in around 4 to 8 weeks but everyone responds differently. You’ll be required to wear a sports / support bra, every day and night for around 2 to 4 weeks and possibly a strap for a couple of days to stop the breasts from moving upwards. It will be slightly uncomfortable and you will be tired for about a week after as your body needs to heal. Get plenty of rest, eat well and don’t undergo any kind of surgery when you know you will have a hectic schedule. It is vital to recover properly to avoid any complications or illness following a surgical operation.

What can I expect to look like / feel?

You may be worried your breasts look unnatural at first and will feel very firm and heavy, but this is a normal response and your breasts will soften over a period of a few months. You will be asked to return to the clinic for a follow up appointment and you will be able to contact us at any time to discuss any concerns or ask any questions following your procedure. We understand that patients can get worried with the slightest changes at this time, however most of which are quite normal (such as slight pains, tingling or numbness) but we are on hand to put your mind at ease. Prior to the surgery, Dr Frati will ensure that the right size and shape implant has been used so you can be confident of the very best results that will leave you delighted with your new shape.

What type of implants does Dr Frati use?

Dr Frati uses breast implants that are approved by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) and the FDA (The U.S Food and Drug Administration) these are filled with a cohesive silicone gel which gives the best look and feel to breasts with implants.
