Loose skin surgery: If you have made the step to a healthier lifestyle and recently lost a significant amount of weight, you’ll probably be feeling so much healthier, slimmer and full of energy.
Your confidence and sense of wellbeing will probably have been increased and no doubt you’ll be getting lots of compliments and congratulations on your achievement. However, a lot of weight loss can come at a price.
Loose skin in areas such as the abdomen can leave behind a stark reminder of the amount of weight that has been eradicated and how the skin was stretched in order to accommodate this excess weight. This loose skin can mean ongoing feelings of self-consciousness and embarrassment, especially when it comes to personal relationships and moments of intimacy.
Even wearing a swimsuit can become a daunting prospect and this loose skin can also cause skin problems such as heat rash and in some cases, bacterial or fungal skin infections.

Abdominoplasty after weight loss
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) is a hugely popular procedure for those who have succeeded in losing a considerable amount of weight in a relatively short space of time, but who have excess skin that they wouldn’t be able to lose in the gym alone, and is performed by Dr Frati at our London, Essex, Birmingham and Manchester clinics.
This surgery removes excess skin and extra far from the abdomen and tightens the muscles in your abdominal wall. It’s suitable for both men and women who are in good health and looking to improve the appearance of the abdominal area. There are generally two types of abdominoplasty:
• Full / complete abdominoplasty – this means that the surgeon will cut your abdomen between your hip bones and then contour the skin, tissue and muscle as required. This type of tummy tuck will involve the repositioning of your belly button.
• Partial / mini abdominoplasty – these are often performed on patients whose fat deposits are mostly located below the navel. During this procedure, Dr Frati will make a smaller incision and will probably not have to relocate your belly button. A mini tummy tuck takes less time than a full procedure and you can usually expect to be in surgery for around 2 hours, depending on your individual case.
Vaser liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck, to optimise results and leave you looking smoother and more sculpted. Vaser is a procedure used to change the contours and the shape of the body by using specialised ultrasound technology and a suction cannula.
Vaser stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Vaser is a less invasive treatment than traditional liposuction and a skilled Vaser surgeon can sculpt around the abdominal muscles to give a ‘six pack’ appearance. Coupled with a tummy tuck procedure, you can achieve flat sculpted abs in a matter of hours.
Your recovery
Loose skin surgery (abdominoplasty) is performed under a general anaesthetic and does require some time afterwards to recover.
With a full tummy tuck you may need to wear drainage tubes under your skin for a few days and you will need to rest for at least a couple of weeks. Going back to your regular routine can take longer, especially activities such as going to the gym. Even with a mini abdominoplasty, you will need to ensure you take adequate time to recover well and some time off work will probably be required (unless you can work from your sofa).
Vaser is less invasive but will still require some days of rest and recuperation and if you have Vaser with your abdominoplasty, recovery will take slightly longer.
Loose skin surgery – your consultation
Before any surgical procedure can be performed, Dr Frati will request that you attend a consultation, so that he can examine you and check your medical history, to ensure you are fit and well for surgery and to discuss the methods he advises and expected results.
It’s important that you ask any questions that you have in your mind at these initial meeting. Dr Frati will offer you comprehensive advice and information so that you are fully aware of what you can expect before, during and after your abdominoplasty surgery.
When you have dedicated yourself to losing a significant amount of weight, why let loose skin potentially cloud what should be a celebration of your body. Abdominoplasty and Vaser surgery can give you that flat, toned looking tummy that you have dreamed of, so you can enjoy your new body.
