    About Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a plastic surgery that removes excess tissue from the labia in order to reduce its size. (1) The labial folds can grow asymmetrically or very long, which for some, develops into a condition called hypertrophy, which is an increase of tissue. Mild to severe hypertrophy of the labia minora can cause discomfort and self-consciousness. (1)

An increase in volume in the labia may cause unwanted bulging beneath close-fitting clothing and uncomfortable pinching during movement. These issues may cause patients to avoid wearing certain clothes or participating in some physical activities. In some situations, women will avoid intimacy altogether because they are embarrassed or experience pain because of their labial tissue. (1) A labiaplasty will remove unnecessary tissue and help restore aesthetic balance to the area. This may include correcting asymmetry and reducing the size of the clitoral hood as well. Your surgery will be customised to your body.

    Benefits

Labiaplasty is an impactful surgery for many women. After this procedure, women may find they are more comfortable and have more confidence. Dr Frati’s labiaplasty patients typically experience:

    • Improved genital aesthetics: Many women desire improvement in the appearance of their genitalia, often leading to increased self-confidence in intimate situations.
    • Improved comfort: Enlarged labia can cause discomfort during physical activities and sex. Reduction often alleviates these issues.
    • Increased sexual satisfaction: Some women report enhanced sensations during intimacy after undergoing labiaplasty, contributing positively to their sexual experiences.
    • Corrected symmetry: Labiaplasty can create a more balanced appearance for asymmetrical labia.
    • More clothing options: Patients often find it easier to wear tight-fitting clothing or swimwear without concern over visible bulges or discomfort.

    Candidates

Labiaplasty is a good option for women who are in good health and understand the realistic impacts of the surgery. Ideal candidates for labiaplasty are those who experience significant discomfort or pain from the length or size of their labia.

Women who are generally dissatisfied with the appearance of their intimate areas are also good candidates for this procedure. The best way to tell if labiaplasty is right for you is to discuss your goals during a personal consultation with Dr Frati.

    Preparation

You should schedule about two weeks off from work in preparation for your labiaplasty. A few days before the procedure, pick up necessities like ice packs and medications. You will also need to arrange rides to and from your appointment. Prepare an area of your home where you can recover comfortably and stress-free. For your best preparation, follow Dr Frati’s instructions and call our office if any questions come to mind.

    Procedure

The labiaplasty surgery will be uniquely customised to you and your aesthetic concerns. All of Dr Frati’s labiaplasty procedures are performed with general anaesthesia to ensure comfort.

A few different techniques may be implemented in labiaplasty. The first of these, and is the trim technique. With this method, Dr Frati will remove the excess tissue from the labia. This technique is best for women who experience excessively long or hanging labial tissue. (2)

A labiaplasty may also employ the wedge technique for tissue excision. With this technique, Dr Frati marks a triangle shape on the tissue. (2) Dr Frati will carefully make incisions along these marks. Once the tissue is removed, the two tissue ends are sutured together to sculpt symmetrical and reduced labia.

Labiaplasty may also include a clitoral hood reduction. Reducing extra folds of skin around the clitoris can help enhance the appearance of the labia and possibly improve sensitivity in the area.

These methods will be gone over in more detail during your consultation. Dr Frati will help you determine which technique is best for your goals.

    Recovery

Dr Frati will provide you with recovery instructions that are specific to your labiaplasty case. The main symptom you will notice after surgery will most likely be temporary swelling. You will have a few regular follow-up appointments where Dr Frati will monitor your healing. Most patients can return to work after about a week, but we recommend resuming work and normal routines slowly and carefully.

If you have any questions during your recovery, give us a call so we can provide you with helpful information. We are here to help you throughout the process and provide any resources you may need!
