    All About Chin Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most optimal treatments to address small pockets of fat in hard-to-reach areas. When fat collects under the chin, it creates a distressing appearance that commonly affects patients in negative ways. It often makes them look overweight or older than they actually are, leading them to seek treatment. Chin liposuction allows for predictable and noticeable fat removal from the area. (1)

    Localised Fat Under the Chin

When tissue collects underneath the chin it is called submental fat. This area is notoriously difficult, as this fat is typically resistant to diet and exercise. Fat collection under the chin can result from genetic predisposition or lifestyle choices and is often impacted by weight fluctuation. Submental fat may cause distress about one’s appearance which impacts their daily life and self-esteem.

Patients with submental fat often find it distracting and concerning, leading them to conceal it with clothing or by growing facial hair. A 2019 study observed that excess submental fat not only influences a patient’s self-perception but can also impact their actions, often causing them to avoid taking photographs of themselves or answering video calls. (2)

Using liposuction to remedy submental fat directly improves a patient’s bodily perception and frees them from the behaviours that manifest from trying to hide it. With the latest technological advancements, chin liposuction is safer than ever, making it an extremely common and useful treatment option.

    VASER Liposuction for the Chin

Dr Frati trained under and learned his technique from the creator of VASER liposuction, giving him a unique and extensive knowledge of the procedure and its intricacies. This type of liposuction implements a special ultrasonic cannula to break up and liquefy fat cells before removal. It increases the safety and efficiency of the procedure, often leading to faster recovery periods and less discomfort. VASER liposuction is also tailor-made to target difficult-to-treat areas of the body like the chin.

    Benefits of Submental Liposuction

The benefits of chin liposuction go beyond just increasing your confidence.

    It provides:

    • Double chin reduction
    • Overall improvement of jawline
    • Natural-looking results
    • Minimal scarring
    • Improved self-esteem
    • Short, safe procedure length
    • Quick recovery
    • Long-lasting results

    Ideal Candidates

This procedure is intended for those with bothersome submental fat. You must have good skin elasticity and no underlying conditions that may impact your healing abilities. To receive chin liposuction, you must also be in good overall health and a non-smoker. Dr. Frati asks those who consume tobacco and nicotine to quit at least one week before surgery and for the duration of their recovery. If you seek a more contoured and defined jawline and align with the above characteristics, chin liposuction may be an optimal treatment.

    Personal Consultation with Dr. Frati

During your consultation, Dr Frati will thoroughly examine the treatment area to best determine your candidacy. You will have plenty of time to ask any questions and voice concerns you may have about chin liposuction. The rest of the appointment will be spent gathering your medical history and finding out about your cosmetic desires. Dr Frati will spend time getting to know you and your situation before he plans your procedure. If you are deemed a good candidate, a member of the Harley Surgery staff will assist you in scheduling your chin liposuction appointment and follow-ups with Dr Frati.

    Preparation

Dr. Frati creates a comprehensive checklist for you to follow in the weeks leading up to chin liposuction. To best prepare yourself for surgery, please refrain from drinking alcohol and consuming tobacco and nicotine products before your scheduled appointment. This helps you heal quicker and decreases your chances of related complications. Avoid blood-thinning medications and certain herbal supplements as directed.

You may be prescribed antibiotics by Dr Frati. Please take these exactly as instructed. Though the surgery may not require general anaesthesia, we recommend finding a trusted loved one who can drive you to and from our facilities.

    Chin Liposuction Procedure

Dr Frati starts the chin liposuction procedure by administering local anaesthetic and sedation to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Firstly, he numbs the chin and jawline area and then infiltrates it with a special liquid called tumescent fluid. This separates the fat from the skin and important internal anatomy and provides anaesthetic to numb the rest of the neck. Once you cannot feel anything, Dr Frati makes his incision just underneath the midline of the chin. He may make two additional incisions behind the ears depending on your treatment plan.

If VASER is your chosen liposuction method, Dr Frati then inserts the ultrasonic cannula to break up the fat. Next, he suctions out the emulsified fat with a different hollowed needle until he achieves the desired contour. Chin liposuction typically takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete.

    Recovery

At the end of the surgery, Dr Frati places a compression garment around the chin and neck area to preserve results and control swelling. It is very important to wear the compression garment to avoid uneven contour or during recovery, especially during the first postoperative week. Patients typically experience noticeable bruising and swelling that persists throughout recovery. To curb this, avoid all strenuous activity and exercise until healing is complete. Dr Frati recommends taking 7 to 10 days off of work to rest.

    Results

Chin Liposuction London, Manchester, Highgate, Birmingham, UK

Swelling can persist for 3 to 4 months after chin liposuction. This directly impacts your results, making them difficult to see until it dissipates. You may see a slight change at first, but your final chin contour may not be completely visible until 6 months to 1 year have passed. The upside is that these results are long-lasting, typically kept for 10 years or longer. As long as you are diligent with sun protection and keep a consistent weight, you can enjoy your improved chin contour for many years to come.

    Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

    FaceTite

For more complete anti-ageing results, Dr Frati can perform the minimally-invasive treatment FaceTite. It uses radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis to tighten and rejuvenate the skin. This process also vaporises any leftover fat cells and removes them, improving your results. It can be easily performed in addition to chin liposuction.

Radiofrequency is commonly used in skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing treatments to increase collagen and elastin production. When the skin is targeted with controlled energy, it prompts our natural healing processes. The skin is essentially influenced to create new cells to replace the damaged ones, a process that continues long after the treatment is finished. This ensures long-lasting skin tightening.

    Morpheus8

To further promote collagen and elastin production, Morpheus8 is a revolutionary treatment that combines microneedling and radiofrequency technology. When applied, it swiftly prompts cell regeneration and supports skin cell turnover to tighten and contour the face or body. With adjustable needle widths that send radiofrequency deep into the subdermal layers of the skin, Morpheus8 is a two-in-one treatment that can be a great addition after liposuction.

If your skin is lax after submental fat removal, Dr Frati may recommend adding one of these treatments to tighten the skin. For those interested in learning more about cosmetic treatments for the neck and chin, read our blog for exclusive insights.
