Cosmetic Gynaecology

More and more women are becoming aware of a now, popular surgical procedure to reshape and tighten the vagina, usually following childbirth or with the onset of natural ageing. The days of taboo surrounding this type of cosmetic surgery are long gone and it is not at all uncommon for women to enquire about cosmetic gynaecology. Fortunately, advances in cosmetic surgery mean there are several methods of treatment and popular discussion in the media make this subject much easier to talk about.

As a fully qualified plastic surgeon, highly experienced in cosmetic gynaecology, Dr Riccardo Frati offers vaginoplasty in several forms, to his patients, from his Harley Street practice.

How can cosmetic gynaecology help me?

Vaginoplasty can change the way the labia and surrounding vaginal tissue looks and surgery can be performed on the outer areas of the genitalia – the pubis mound and labia minora – and on the inside if the surgeon is tightening the area.

What are the benefits of having cosmetic gynaecology?

  • Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Ability to wear jeans or a swim suit and a wider range of clothes
  • Feel more feminine and attractive
  • Rejuvenation of the female genitalia
  • To enhance the feelings of sexual gratification

How do I know if I am suitable for cosmetic gynaecology?

You will be able to discuss your concerns and goals with Dr Frati in a full consultation prior to surgery. He will assess your medical history to ensure you are both physically and emotionally fit and ready for surgery. He will also examine the areas of concern so that he can advise on the best course of treatment.

What can I expect during surgery?

Vaginal reshaping and tightening surgery differs from patient to patient depending on exactly which area of the genitalia is being operated on. Surgery can be performed to reduce the length or change the shape of the labia minora (the inner lips of the vagina).  For some people, the pubis mound can appear larger than they would like it to and this is particularly noticeable when naked or when wearing lingerie or swimwear. The mound can be reduced quickly and easily, simply by removing the excess fatty tissue and reshaping the area above the vulva. Dr Frati can also tighten the vagina itself in order to enhance the feelings of sexual gratification or simply to return your vagina to the way it was before childbirth. This is achieved by reconstructing the outer third of the vagina, the internal diameter and the vaginal opening.

Will I need a general anaesthetic?

In many cases, the surgery can be performed under a local anaesthetic. However, in some cases, a general anaesthetic may be required and Dr Frati will discuss the options with you in consultation.

Does it hurt?

As you will have a form of anaesthesia, you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure. Following the treatment, you may experience some swelling and bruising and this can be managed with pain relief.

When will I see the results?

Results can be seen straight away, however you will need to allow a few weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside. You may also need to have stitches removed at a follow up appointment with the nurse.

What about aftercare/downtime?

Healing from a typical vaginoplasty can take anything up to 8 weeks, although everyone is different, depending on the type of treatment they have received. You may need to obtain from being intimate for some weeks following your operation and Dr Frati will advise you on how to take care of yourself and the expected healing process in your case. As with any surgical procedure, you will need a period of rest and to take care of yourself in order to heal and recovery properly.
