Blepharoplasty is the technical description for eyelid surgery. It is performed under anaesthetic and can correct defects, deformities and disfigurations of the eyelids, as well as for the cosmetic enhancement of the facial appearance, when upper and lower eyebags start to appear, during the ageing process. Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular procedures performed here at Dr Frati’s surgeries in London and Manchester, offering life-altering and sometimes life-changing results.
Blepharoplasty involves the excision and removal as well as the possible repositioning of excess tissues, such as the skin and adipocyte fat. Corresponding muscle and tendon tissues are also reinforced to correct functional and cosmetic issues of the periorbita (the area from the eyebrow to the upper area of the cheek, which can be felt with the finger if you run it around your eye-socket area).
Blepharoplasty is increasingly popular with both genders…
Traditionally, blepharoplasty has been most popular among women of a certain age, looking to improve their facial appearance. As the ageing process can significantly affect the area surrounding the eyes, this can lead to a tired and puffy look. The upper part of the eyelid can sag so significantly, that the fold of the eyelid can no longer be seen, leading to a permanently exhausted appearance.
At Dr Frati’s clinics we are now seeing more and more men who are seeking blepharoplasty to give a more ‘awake’ look and more youthful appearance. This is due to several factors:
- As divorce rates increase, those who are recently separated and looking for new relationships are seeking to improve their appearance to be more attractive, vibrant and younger-looking.
- Plastic surgery for men is more widely accepted, thus encouraging more men to step forward and undergo these procedures.
- More male celebrities are speaking openly about having cosmetic procedures and admitting to having subtle ‘enhancements’ to increase their confidence and improve their appearance.
Eyelid surgery – your consultation
Before any procedure can take place here at Dr Frati’s clinics, we ask that you attend a no-obligation consultation, so that you can discuss with Dr Frati, your individual concerns and requirements for results. This will also give Dr Frati an opportunity to examine your face and in particular, the area around your eyes, so that he can decide which techniques to use and advise on the results you can expect to achieve.
What to expect from blepharoplasty
During the procedure, Dr Frati will usually work on the upper lids first, by cutting along the fold of the eyelid and removing excess skin, muscle and possibly fat. He will then close the incision. For the lower lid, Dr Frati will make an incision just below the lashes in your eye’s natural crease or inside the lower lid. He will then remove or re-distribute any excess fat, muscle or loose skin. After which, he will close the cut. If your upper eyelid droops close to the pupil of your eye, Dr Frati may perform a procedure called ptosis, which will provide additional support to the eyebrow muscle.
Following your surgery you will spend some time in one of our recovery rooms, where you will be monitored and checked periodically. When our clinical team feel you are ready to return home, you can leave the clinic with a list of aftercare instructions to follow, along with a date to return to the clinic for a post-procedure check-up.
Any bruising and swelling will generally subside in around 10 to 14 days. In this time, you will probably want to rest and recuperate at home. You will be able to see noticeable results whilst you recuperate but it’s important to know that optimum results may not be seen for several weeks following the procedure, when the swelling, bruising and scars have faded.
Blepharoplasty can dramatically improve the appearance of the eyes, leading to increased confidence and a sense of wellbeing. For more information and to book a no-obligation consultation with Dr Frati at our London or Manchester clinic, contact our friendly reception team.
