Nipple Reduction
Conveniently located to serve the areas of London and Manchester

Nipple reduction surgery is a procedure that removes excess tissue to resize and reshape the nipples. (1)
For many patients, prominent nipples cause physical discomfort, self-consciousness, and difficulty wearing certain clothing. Nipple reduction can improve comfort, confidence, and overall breast aesthetics. This procedure focuses on enhancing the area rather than augmentation, offering subtle yet impactful changes that align the nipple size with the natural symmetry of the breast.
Dr Riccardo Frati and his experienced surgical team at Harley Surgery perform our nipple reduction procedures. His expertise delivers enhanced and proportion-focused results across a full spectrum of breast procedures. His approach uses precision and artistic judgement, offering a more balanced and natural-looking result to the patient’s anatomy.

About Nipple Reduction
Nipple reduction surgery reduces the length, width, or appearance of the nipple while preserving its natural shape and position. (2) This procedure can address nipples that enlarge or elongate due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, ageing, and more. In some cases, patients are born with nipples that are more prominent than average, while others notice gradual changes over time. Nipple reduction offers a precise solution that focuses on proportional balance.
Benefits
Nipple reduction surgery offers life-changing and transformative results, including:
- Improved nipple proportion
- Reduced nipple projection through clothing
- Enhanced comfort during daily activities and exercise
- Increased self-confidence
- Balanced appearance of the nipple and areola
- Long-lasting aesthetic results
Ideal Candidates
Patients who feel self-conscious about their long or prominent nipples, who experience discomfort from their nipple appearance, and who have nipples that have changed after pregnancy or breastfeeding may be ideal candidates for this procedure. These concerns may cause patients to have low self-esteem, social anxiety, and poor body image, disrupting their quality of life and daily activities. If you also feel self-conscious when your nipples remain visible through clothing, swimwear, or fitted garments, a nipple reduction can resolve these concerns. The patient must be in relatively good health and maintain realistic expectations for this procedure.
Personal Consultation
During your personal consultation, Dr Frati will review your medical history, discuss your aesthetic preferences, and perform a physical examination of the breasts to understand your concerns, goals, and overall anatomy. Dr Frati will evaluate nipple size, areolar dimensions, breast volume, skin elasticity, and overall symmetry before designing a personalised surgical plan. He will also take measurements of nipple length, width, and symmetry to determine the most appropriate surgical approach. Because nipple anatomy varies widely between individuals, he will carefully plan the technique that he will utilise and explain your specific procedure in detail. Dr Frati will also assess whether nipple reduction alone is sufficient or if combining procedures would better support your aesthetic goals.
This meeting also provides an opportunity to discuss recovery, scarring, sensation, and long-term outcomes. Asking any questions and addressing any concerns will allow you to feel informed and confident before proceeding. Dr Frati will create a fully customised treatment plan tailored specifically to your goals and help you achieve your dream results. Preparation
Preparing for nipple reduction surgery involves several important steps to support healing and reduce surgical risk. To ensure a smooth procedure and optimise your results, we advise you to:
- Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements two weeks before the procedure
- Refrain from nicotine use at least three weeks before the surgery date
- Arrange time off from work and any physical exertion
- Obtain any required medical clearance
- Plan transportation and short-term postoperative support
Procedure
Nipple reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure that features local anaesthesia and/or light sedation. Dr Frati begins by carefully marking the nipple to guide precise tissue removal. He will then make a small incision on the base or side of the nipple and remove excess tissue in a small V-shape or wedge-shape to reduce length. For width reduction, he will make a circumferential incision around the base to reduce the width of the nipple from the underside. Using these techniques, the shape of the nipple becomes smaller, more natural-looking, and more balanced.
Dr Frati will carefully place sutures to close the incisions and support healing. Lastly, Dr Frati will apply an antibiotic ointment or a sterile dressing to the area.
The procedure itself is relatively quick, often lasting between 30 minutes and an hour. Because nipple reduction focuses on refinement rather than volume change, the surrounding breast tissue typically remains unaffected. Dr Frati’s technique prioritises symmetry, sensation preservation, and discreet incision placement.
Results
You will begin to notice the results shortly after your surgical procedure. You may notice initial swelling and redness that can temporarily affect nipple appearance. As healing progresses, the nipple begins to settle into its ideal shape, and scarring typically fades over time and blends naturally with the nipple’s anatomy. Patients report a renewed sense of comfort, joy, and confidence once healing is complete. They begin to notice their clothing fits better, and their nipples appear balanced with their breast size and shape. The results from nipple reduction surgery are long-lasting when patients maintain a stable weight and protect their breast health.
Recovery
After your surgical procedure, Dr Frati will provide you with postoperative instructions, including guidance on wound care, garment use, and activity restrictions before you go home and rest. Mild swelling, tenderness, and sensitivity are common symptoms during your early recovery period. These symptoms will gradually resolve within three weeks as the tissue heals. We advise you to postpone exercise and avoid heavy lifting until the nipples heal, although you may return to your daily activities within a few days.
Follow-up appointments allow Dr Frati to monitor progress and ensure proper healing. He places a strong emphasis on safety and aftercare to ensure that every patient not only achieves their desired results but also experiences a smooth healing process.
Corresponding Procedures
Nipple reduction pairs well with other breast procedures, and together, they can optimise the overall results and appearance of your breasts.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses implants or fat transfer to increase a patient’s breast size, restore volume, and to improve symmetry. Combining breast augmentation with a nipple reduction procedure allows nipple size to balance with newly enhanced breast contours. (3) This combination is ideal for patients seeking to increase their breast volume and refine their nipple appearance.
Breast Reduction
A breast reduction procedure removes excess skin and fat from the breasts to alleviate physical discomfort from carrying excess weight in the chest area, to reach a smaller cup size, and improve posture. Reducing the size of your chest along with altering the shape of your nipples can offer a brand new look and shape to your breasts, delivering results that increase your self-esteem.
Breast Uplift
A breast uplift is a procedure that tightens the breast tissues and removes excess skin to eliminate sagging and offer a lifted appearance to your chest. Combining a breast uplift with a nipple reduction can offer a more youthful appearance to the chest by tightening the breast tissue and enhancing nipple symmetry.
Male Breast Reduction
A male breast reduction removes excess fat or glandular tissue to create a firmer and more masculine chest contour, often to address gynaecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. In conjunction with a nipple reduction, these procedures can address prominent nipple projection in men while delivering a flatter-looking chest.
