Septoplasty
Conveniently located to serve the areas of London and Manchester

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that can correct a crooked, bent, or underdeveloped septum to restore your natural breathing function. The septum is the thin wall of cartilage and bone that separates the two nasal passages of your nose. A deviated septum can either be present from birth or damaged due to an injury or sustained trauma. (1) This can cause several concerns, such as chronic obstruction and difficulties breathing. With a septoplasty, you can address each of these concerns with ease and restore your sense of personal comfort and confidence.

About Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that can straighten and reposition your septum to restore your nose’s full breathing capabilities. Dr Frati can perform this procedure to address the appearance of a deviated septum, which is a condition where your septum becomes crooked or bent. This can cause recurrent issues, such as irritation, difficulties breathing, feelings of congestion, inflammation, and more.
Deviated septa can be present from birth or occur when you sustain trauma to the nose. While many over-the-counter sprays and medications can help reduce some of the side effects that occur alongside a deviated septum, they simply cannot address the root cause of your concerns in the way that surgical intervention can. Because of this, septoplasty has become the primary method of correcting this condition, as well as one of the most commonly performed procedures within the fields of otolaryngology (ears, nose, and throat) and plastic surgery. Benefits
Septoplasty offers several important benefits, including:
- Restored Functionality: The primary benefit of septoplasty is its ability to restore your full breathing function and capabilities.
- Improved Nasal Health: Dr Frati can perform this procedure to address any recurrent or chronic sinus infections and irritation.
- Enhanced Comfort: Improving your ability to breathe can reduce any difficulties or discomfort you experience when sleeping or performing more physically demanding activities.
- Tailored Treatment Plans: Dr Frati tailors your treatment plan according to your natural anatomy and needs to ensure results that align with each of your expectations.
Candidates
You may be an ideal candidate for a septoplasty if you have chronic difficulties breathing through one or both sides of your nose or have experienced recurrent blockages that will not respond to over-the-counter treatments.
To qualify for this procedure, you will need to be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding your results. You should also be non-smoking or willing to quit using nicotine. Dr Frati will determine your candidacy during your consultation.
Personal Consultation
During your personal consultation, Dr Frati will meet with you individually to finalise your candidacy and create your treatment plan. He will discuss what septoplasty consists of, assess your medical history, and converse with you about your concerns and desired results. He will also perform a physical examination to evaluate your nasal and overall facial anatomy.
Dr Frati will use this information to determine the most effective approach for your needs. He will select the best surgical strategies and may suggest combining your procedure with another, depending on your personal goals. Dr Frati will also take the time to answer any questions you may have, as he wants you to leave this meeting feeling well-informed and empowered.

Preparation
Once you have scheduled your septoplasty, there are several preparations that you will need to make to ensure you are ready. To help you, Dr Frati will give you a set of detailed preoperative instructions. He may instruct you to:
- Avoid Certain Substances: Discontinue taking any medications or supplements that may thin your blood.
- Arrange Transportation: Have a friend or family member transport you home from your procedure. Dr Frati uses general anaesthesia when performing septoplasties, which means you will be unable to drive yourself home afterwards.
- Plan Time Away: You will need to prepare to take time away from your responsibilities, career, and other commitments to allow your body to heal.
- Fill Your Prescriptions: Dr Frati advises that you pick up any medications you need for your recovery ahead of time. This can reduce your post-operative stress by ensuring you have them ready when you need them.
- Stop Smoking: Cease any nicotine consumption in the weeks leading up to your procedure, and continue maintaining your abstinence throughout your recovery.
- Refrain from Alcohol: Avoid consuming any alcohol in the days before and after your scheduled appointment.
Procedure
Dr Frati will perform your septoplasty at his surgical centre. The duration of your septoplasty will vary depending on your treatment plan, but you can expect Dr Frati to complete it in less than two hours. We will administer general anaesthesia at the beginning of your procedure to ensure you are unconscious throughout the entire process.
Dr Frati will then place several incisions within the nose, eliminating the possibility of external scarring. Once he reaches your underlying nasal structures, he will carefully remove, reshape, or reposition various sections of your septum to restore the natural functions. Once he makes the necessary corrections, he will carefully close each of your incisions and place an internal splint inside your nose. Dr Frati will then allow you to rest under the care of his team until they are ready to release you.
Recovery
After your septoplasty, you will need to take some time away to focus on your recovery. You may return to desk work and other light activities within several days to one week, but you will need to continue refraining from more strenuous activities until Dr Frati clears you to return.
As you heal, you may experience some swelling, bruising, and tenderness around your nose and its surrounding features. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own over time, but you may also manage them using a cold compress, medications Dr Frati prescribes, and plenty of rest. Dr Frati will also ask you to return for follow-up visits as you recover to remove your splint and ensure your results are developing as expected.
Dr Frati will give you a full set of postoperative instructions to help you navigate your recovery. We ask that you contact us if any questions or concerns arise so that our team may provide you with the necessary guidance.
Results
You will be able to enjoy the full results of your septoplasty once any residual swelling subsides. You will be able to experience an improvement in your airflow, as well as better overall breathing functions, as this procedure addresses the root cause of each of your concerns.
