Breast Uplift vs. Breast Reduction

Breast enhancement is an area of surgery focused on augmenting the appearance or volume of the breasts to improve your appearance and/or restore your comfort. Both breast uplift and breast reduction procedures restore a more proportionate chest; however, these two procedures serve distinct purposes, which we will discuss in the following article.

Dr Riccardo Frati of Harley Surgery is an internationally renowned cosmetic surgeon and leads one of London’s most coveted cosmetic practices. Dr Frati received world-class training from master surgeons and now utilises those skills and techniques to help each individual achieve their aesthetic and personal goals.

About Breast Uplifts

A breast uplift, also known as a breast lift or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that restores a more youthful position and symmetrical appearance to the breasts without significantly altering their volume. (1) Over time, factors such as ageing or pregnancy can cause your breasts to sag or droop. While this is natural, sagging can result in an aged appearance and even impact bra and clothing shopping.

During a breast uplift, Dr Frati removes excess skin while repositioning your breasts to a higher placement, creating a more flattering and youthful appearance.

We administer general anaesthesia before your procedure begins. Dr Frati will make one of three incision techniques.

  • Crescent Lift: This uses a small, crescent-shaped incision at the top portion of the areola—it best suits those needing only minimal skin corrections.
  • Vertical or “Lollipop” Lift: This incision encircles the areola and extends downward towards the breast crease—best for more moderate amounts of skin laxity.
  • Inverted T or “Anchor” Lift: The inverted T incision builds off of the vertical lift, adding a third incision that follows horizontally along the breast crease. We use this technique for more extensive corrections.

About Breast Reductions

A breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue and skin to reduce the weight and volume of overly large breasts. Breasts that are too large or heavy can lead to chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain, posture concerns, and mobility issues. (2) Dr Frati can perform several different breast reduction techniques to restore both your comfort and appearance, allowing you to live your life unburdened by the negative effects of overly large breasts.

Similar to the breast uplift, your breast reduction will begin with general anaesthesia to ensure a comfortable experience. After preparing the treatment area, Dr Frati will place incisions using one of two techniques. These techniques are similar to those used in an uplift procedure, but are customised for more tissue removal:

  • Vertical or “Lollipop” Incision
  • Inverted T or “Anchor” Incision

Dr Frati may also perform liposuction to address fatty tissue and further sculpt the breasts. (2)

Candidates

Anyone interested in breast procedures should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding their results. Patients should ideally be nonsmokers or willing to quit using nicotine for a period of time. Future pregnancies can alter the results of either of these procedures, so patients should have finished planning their families before considering surgery. Dr Frati will determine each patient’s candidacy for both a breast uplift and a breast reduction during their consultation.

Breast Uplift Candidates

Candidates suitable for a breast uplift typically include women interested in enhancing the shape and appearance of their breasts without altering their volume. Breast uplifts effectively address sagging or drooping breast tissue, and they can also correct malpositioned, downward-pointing nipples.

Breast Reduction Candidates

Breast reduction candidates include adolescent or adult women interested in reducing the size or volume of their breasts to reduce discomfort or irritation. This procedure is highly effective for addressing the chronic neck, back, or shoulder pain caused by overly large breasts.

Personal Consultation

The best way to determine whether a breast uplift or breast reduction is right for you is to attend a personal consultation. During your consultation, Dr Frati will meet with you individually and ask about your medical history, current prescriptions, concerns, and aesthetic goals. He will also perform a physical examination to assess your breasts.

Using this information, Dr Frati will recommend the procedure that best suits your goals. He will tailor your procedure to employ the most effective surgical techniques and may suggest additional procedures to enhance your outcomes. Dr Frati will also take the time to answer any questions you may have. Through this combination of careful assessment and open conversation, Dr Frati will create a personalised solution that addresses each of your concerns.

Preparation

After scheduling your procedure, we will provide a set of detailed pre-operative instructions. Breast uplifts and breast reductions follow similar preparation steps, and we require you to follow each given guideline.

We may advise you to discontinue taking blood-thinning medications and supplements and cease nicotine and alcohol consumption in the weeks before and after your procedure. You will also need to take time away from your responsibilities and pre-arrange transportation home after your procedure. Many patients also find it helpful to fill their prescriptions in advance and arrange for at-home care throughout the first few days of their recovery.

Recovery

After your breast enhancement procedure, you will need to take time away from your job and other commitments to focus on resting. You may experience some swelling or bruising around the breasts, but these effects will gradually subside. Depending on your surgical plan, Dr Frati may ask you to wear a supportive bra throughout your recovery. This bra can help minimise swelling and support the new shape of your breasts as they heal.

You will be able to return to work after approximately one to two weeks, but you will need to avoid any strenuous or physically demanding tasks until Dr Frati approves.

Dr Frati will provide a set of detailed post-operative instructions after your procedure. These will include full guidance on how to care for your incisions, manage any temporary effects, and inform you when you may return to certain activities. By following these instructions, you can ensure a smooth recovery and optimal outcomes.

Results

You will notice an immediate difference in the appearance of your breasts immediately after your procedure, but the full, refined results become more apparent as you continue healing. Regardless of whether you received a breast uplift or breast reduction, you can enjoy your results for several years. However, implementing healthy lifestyle habits will prolong your results, as weight fluctuations can impact their effects.

FAQ

What is the difference between a breast uplift and a breast reduction?

A breast uplift reshapes and repositions the breasts without altering their volume or fullness. A breast reduction removes excess breast tissue to reduce the weight of enlarged breasts.

How long will the results of a breast uplift last compared to the results of a breast reduction?

Both a breast uplift and a breast reduction provide long-lasting results, as they use similar techniques. Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or the natural effects of ageing can affect your long-term appearance.

Will there be any significant scarring after a breast uplift or reduction?

Any surgical procedure will leave scarring, but Dr Frati places each incision in a discreet and inconspicuous area to minimise its visibility. Over time, any scarring will gradually fade.

Are there any risks associated with either a breast uplift or a breast reduction?

Both breast uplifts and reductions have certain risks, such as infection, bleeding, poor scarring, dissatisfaction with results, and more. During your consultation, Dr Frati will discuss each of these risks, their associated complications, and how to avoid them.

Can I combine a breast uplift and breast reduction within one procedure?

Yes, many patients combine their breast reduction and uplift for more comprehensive and cohesive results. For further information, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr Frati.

How are breast uplift and reduction similar?

A breast reduction uses many of the same techniques as a breast uplift; it is often necessary to lift the breasts on the chest wall in some way during a breast reduction.
