Facelift Surgery, Dr Frati

As the ageing process progresses past the point where light, non-surgical treatments are no longer effective, we look to a more extensive form of treatment to reverse the signs of getting old. Face lift surgery (otherwise known as rhytidectomy) is one of the most commonly requested procedures by both men and women. It is performed to remove or reduce the skin around the face which loses elasticity and begins to sag. This is usually around the eyes, mouth and jawline. Face lift surgery also reduces lines and wrinkles, rejuvenates a tired looking appearance and improves skin quality due to increased collagen production following the procedure.

Dr Riccardo Frati is a fully qualified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in this procedure and offers the treatment from his Harley Street Clinic.

What are the benefits of Facelift Surgery?

  • Increased self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Looking younger
  • Feeling rejuvenated and fresher
  • Ability to wear clothes with lower necklines – no longer the need to hide behind a scarf / high-necked top
  • Easier application of make-up

How do I know if I am suitable for face lift surgery?

Before any procedure can be carried out, Dr Frati will conduct an extensive consultation with you to discuss your concerns, goals and expected outcome and to also check your medical history to ensure you are fit both physically and emotionally, to go ahead with treatment. It is important to understand that face lift surgery is an invasive, surgical procedure and that there will be an element of downtime following this procedure.

What happens during the procedure?

There are three main types of face lift surgery and these include traditional, minimal access and cranial suspension (MACS) and keyhole surgery. Dr Frati will decide and advise you in consultation, which procedure he feels would bring you the best results and is most suitable for your case. In many instances, combining face lift surgery with a neck lift can bring amazing results, turning back the clock for some, by 10 years. All procedures are performed under general anaesthetic.

Traditional face lift

In this surgery, Dr Frati will make a surgical incision along your hairline, down past the front of your ears and into the hairline behind the ears. Once the incision has been made Dr Frati will very carefully separate the skin from the underlying tissue, before repositioning excess fat and tightening facial muscles. The skin will then be lifted and stitched into place along the original incision and any excess skin removed. As incisions are positioned carefully within the hairline and in a zig zag shape, you will not see any scarring.

Minimal access surgery

The main difference between this type of face lift surgery and the traditional method is that the incisions made are smaller and the tightening of facial muscles and removal of excess fat is done through these small surgical incisions. Excess fat can also be removed using this face lift procedure.

Keyhole surgery

If keyhole surgery is the right procedure for you, Dr Frati will make several very small incisions into the skin on your face. He will then use an endoscope, beneath the skin and the live image will be displayed on a monitor. In using this piece of technology he can see exactly which muscles to tighten and how much excess fat to remove, if appropriate. Keyhole surgery is most commonly used for brow lifts and upper face lifts and offers a short recovery time and will result in less scarring, but it is not suitable for all cases.

What happens following surgery?

In the case of traditional face lift surgery, once the procedure is complete, your face will be wrapped in bandages to prevent infection and to support your face while the skin heals, but these will usually be removed the day before you are allowed to go home from hospital. Drains will also be stitched into place behind the ears to allow excess blood and fluids to drain from the area these are sometimes left in for the first few days but this is decided on a case-by-case basis.

For minimal access and keyhole surgery, your recovery time will be faster and you may be able to go home on the day of your surgery. This will however, be discussed with Dr Frati so you can make suitable arrangements.

When will I see results?

As this surgery is an invasive and dramatic process, you will see results immediately. However, expect to be swollen and bruised for several weeks, depending on the type of surgery. You will need to return to the clinic after around a week to have any stitches / drains removed and to be examined and to ensure all healing is going to plan. Full results can be seen up to 8 weeks following treatment, however this does depend on the individual case and the type of surgery performed.
